Laguna, Singapore
Laguna National Golf Resort club, one of the premier golf clubs in Singapore, is in the midst of a major bunker project on its Masters course. Dating from 1993, the Andy Dye-designed course is one of Singapore’s best regarded golf venues, but, as general manager Mark Isley says, its bunkers had long been a problem.
“The bunkers really haven’t been much changed since the course was built,” he explains.“They have no liners, and the sand and soil always mix. Things get pretty ugly after a big rain event, which we get regularly given that we are in the tropics. We can get 50mm of rain in an hour very easily, and when we do, there is a lot of erosion and contamination, and we waste a lot of labour putting the bunkers back together and pushing sand back up the faces. We have needed to do something about it for a while, and now is the time.”
Laguna is working with Centuar Asia-Pacific, the Singapore distributor for both CapillaryFlow and EcoBunker, to rebuild all the greenside bunkers on the Masters course. “We are basically gutting the bunkers–taking out the sand, reinstalling drainage and then installing the Capillary an EcoBunker products before replacing new sand,” says Isley. “We had put Capillary Bunkers in on the Classic course during 2017, and the results have been consistently excellent. I’ve been following EcoBunker for some time and it is a practical approach to bunker management. Together I believe they will give us the best available solution. It’s a good mix.”
Laguna is handling the project using its in-house team, including a staff shaper, and says the support from Centaur has been first rate. “Bryan Littlejohn from Centaur comes in every time we’re doing work and advises us. They are first rate guys,” says Isley. “We are working with a very busy golf course, so the project is taking a little longer than I’d like, but it is progressing solidly. We will be finished by the end of the year–we have to be, as we have a number of large tournaments next year, including the DP World Tour’s Singapore Classic in February. We are targeting 100 bunkers by the end of the year, and we’ve done 21 so far.”
