Capillary Concrete is used all over the world. We have over 1000 golf course installations in 40 countries and have not run into a situation to where we could not install Capillary Concrete anywhere.

How is a golf bunker constructed?

In recent years golf bunkers have become more and more advanced. In older days bunkers would fill with water and have severe washouts that would create nightmares for Superintendents and cause labor costs. However, today most golf bunkers have drainage underneath a bunker liner, preferably Capillary Concrete, and sand is installed on top to ensure the bunker performs and lasts for many years to come saving the golf course thousands of dollars in labor and maintenance costs.

Why do bunker wash out?

The bunker sand should stay slightly moist all the time to avoid a major change in weight and subsequent wash-out when rain starts. With Capillary Material, some ground moisture is always being fed up to sand as moisture evaporates from sand, effectively delaying a complete dry-out of sand until ground moisture is depleted. This is the reason the patented Capillary Material avoids wash outs better than any other bunker liner product.

How long does a bunker last?

The USGA suggests an average 5-7 years lifespan on a bunker without Capillary Material. Real-life bunkers in harsh climates suggests a Capillary bunker will outlast that by decades, making Capillary Bunkers and the Capillary Material the longest lasting bunker liner, by many years, on the market.

How long does the Capillary Concrete Bunker System take to install?

Typically an 18 hole golf course can be completed within 4-5 weeks. One single bunker can be installed within 1 hour with a crew of 4-6 workers.

Can I install the Capillary Concrete Bunker Liner with my own golf course staff?

Yes, you can! Your area Sales and Installation Manager will train your crew for best practices, You don't need to be certified.

Will concrete trucks drive all over my golf course?

No, the concrete truck will arrive at the staging site and the mix can be delivered to the bunker in a variety of smaller vehicles.

Can Capillary Concrete Bunkers be installed in very cold climates?

Yes, Capillary Concrete bunkers were developed in Scandinavia and can withstand severe weather and ground freezing conditions. Any damage from ground heaving from frost or expanding clay, etc. is covered under the Performance Guarantee and proven not to occur in official ASTM testing protocols and multiple, more than 10 years, real-life installations in severe winter freeze climates.

100% guaranteed never to fail due to freeze-thaw or other difficult weather conditions.

What sand should I choose?

Capillary Concrete recommends using a USGA approved sand. We also recommend having your sand tested and receiving the spec sheet from your supplier prior to making a decision. Refer to the new USGA specifications of bunker sands.

Does the performance guarantee cover installation as well as material?

Yes. The Capillary Concrete Performance Guarantee is designed to ensure that your decision to use the Capillary Concrete product in your bunkers is a risk-free decision. Installers receive a procedures checklist that must be followed to meet coverage standards. If installation procedures are followed and there is a failure, the product will be removed and replaced by Capillary Concrete.

Is the cost of transporting materials to the club included?

Yes. If new or additional materials are required due to a failed installation, the cost of getting the product to your site is covered.

Is the cost of the aggregate covered?

Yes. This guarantee is intended to cover all materials required to achieve a successful installation.

Is the course covered for downtime and loss of revenue?

Capillary Concrete would make every effort to remove and replace any failed installation as to minimize disruptions of golf course business, but cannot cover downtime or loss of revenue.

What happens if the golf course is sold?

That’s ok. The policy is transferable and protects future owners within the policy term.

Yes. Exclusions include war, insurrection, acts of God, 100-year floods, vandalism, construction, golf course personnel or others who intentionally damage the bunker.

Will i damage my golf club on the concrete liner?

When a bunker is maiantained correctly you should never be able to see or hit the liner and if you have it means that sand deptsh are not being maintained thoroughly and you can talk to your Capillary Bunker representative about correct sand and maintenance techniques

If i install capillary wash box and edge on my capillary bunker liner will the performance gaurantee be extended?

If you install Capillary Bunker liner in conjunction with both the wash box and Capillary Edge then we would extend the Performance guarantee from 10 years to 15 years yes!

Can a player hurt themselves or break a wrist hitting the concrete?

When a bunker is maintained correctly you should never be able to see or hit the liner and if you have it means that sand depths are not being maintained properly.

A potential incidence for player injuries is when a golf club stops, gets snagged, while hitting the ball. This can happen anywhere on a golf course, hitting a tree root, an irrigation detail, a rock or a damaged bunker liner. When the bunker liner is not damaged, the club won’t stop, it will instead bounce off the surface of the bunker liner. A bounce very rarely leads to any physical damage like an incidence where the club stops often does. The Capillary Bunker liner is the strongest liner on the market and will never come apart and create any risk of the club snagging like some other products on the market may do.

How long does it take to install a capillary bunker and when can i install sand?

A truck can transport 1,350sf of material and can generally be installed in a few hours from start to finish. Sand can be installed after 24 hours.

What kind of machinery do we need for the installation?

You will need a smaller truck, tractor or similar to transport mix from truck to bunker. A small escavator, frontloader or a tip trailer to get the mix in to the bunker.

What equipment do you need for the installation crew?

You will need shovels, asphalt rake, a long paint roller, bucket of water, something to measure layer depth.

How do you prepare the bottom of the bunker before install?

Shape the bunker, dig drain trench  throughout the whole bunker., no fishbone needed. Place the Washbox in lowest point, fill trenches with drain gravel. Pour Capillary on the bunker bottom in a 2 inch layer.

Capillary Edge FAQs

How does edge help protect my investment in my capillary bunker liner?

Capillary Edge helps create a fully sealed bunker. It prevents debris from the soil or grass edge from entering the bunker. It ensures the bunker’s design integrity with regard to the shape and perimeter is not compromised and that it remains consistent.

Will golf balls bounce off the Capillary Edge?

Yes and no, the will bounce but not so hard that there is any risk of a golfer hurting themselves since the yarn is so soft and the Capillary Edge so dampening.

Do I have to install Capillary to install the Capillary Edge?

Yes, the Capillary Edge is secured by placing it on the very top of the Capillary when finishing the bunker and filling in with Capillary behind it. There must be Capillary material there to secure it.

Capillary Wash box FAQs

What are the benefits of installing a wash box in my bunker and will it pay for itself?

The Wash Box is useful for several reasons. First, it gives you access to your drain line at a later date if you ever need it. Second, it is installed within the vault and helps create a deeper sand profile to help manage the water release curve. Last, and most importantly, it enables you to clean your sand and remove any debris or contamination without having to replace it, which is time-consuming and expensive. So, a Wash Box pays for itself very quickly

How long does it take to clean a bunker with wash box?

It depends on the bunker size. An average bunker usually takes no more than two hours to clean.

Where should i place my wash box?

Wash Box is placed in a vault over the low point in the bunker. It sits on the drain pipe and the vault is filled with bunker sand.

Will i lose sand in the drainage when washing?

No, if you wash carefully the sand will stay in the bunker and only light particles such as sod, silt and organic matter will go down with the water into the drain pipe.

Can you install wash box in an existing bunker?

Yes you can if it is a Capillary Bunker. Find the drainpipe, make a 2x4 feet opening with a diamond saw. Pull out the drain gravel, place the Wash Box on the drain pipe, fill the new vault with bunker sand to the top.

Do I need Capillary in a bunker to install a Wash Box?

Yes, you need to have a Capillary Bunker to use the Wash Box because of the stirring up of the sand with the high pressure water making any other base mix with the sand. Fabrics and other liners will not stand up to the pressure.

Can any bunker sand be used with a wash box?

Yes, any bunker sand can be used with the system, and any sand can be cleaned with the unique and patented system.

Does the Capillary Hydroponics grass arena take wear better than a regular derby field?

Yes, because of the hydroponic principles of growing, the roots grow deeper and the grass gets stronger, making the grass more healthy and resilient to wear and tear.

Is the Capillary Hydroponics arena harder to maintain than a regular derby field?

No, rather the opposite. Because so many maintenance practices can be automated and centralized, much less time and efforts need to be spent to run the system. Robotic mowers, fertigation in the basins, any treatments to grass can be done straight into the water instead of having to treat the whole grass area etc, etc.

How long does it take to build a grass arena?

Around4-6 weeks and another 2-3 months to grow the grass.

In what climate do you need a geothermal system underneath your grass arena?

Whereit freezes to have a longer season and where it is really hot to cool down the water.

Equestrian Sand FAQs

Does the concrete base layer ever crack? And will that effect the system?

All concrete installations will have joints (cracks) to relieve pressure from expansion. The capillary material can crack but it will always stay level so if it cracks it will not effect the function of the system.

Can the footing give you the right cushioning and responsiveness with the concrete straight under the sand as compared to an ebb & flow arena?

Yes, the capillary flow system can provide cushioning and responsiveness with concrete straight under the sand. The capillary flow system works by creating an environment within the footing where water is able to move freely and fill any voids that are created. As the water flows through these voids, it seeks out the lowest point and, as a result, creates a cushioning medium. This cushioning medium not only provides increased shock absorption, but also enhances the reaction of the horse’s hoof as it contacts the sand surface.

Can you put fiber in the footing?

Yes, any type of arena can be perfected with the Capillary Equestrian system. The key is perfect moisture conditions regardless of the weather, and regulating the moisture is the most important thing in arena management regardless of the type of riding is exercised.

Will the Capillary Concrete base clog with sand over time?

When the Capillary material is installed it is treated with our proprietary admix, which structure prevents migration of sand and particles into the drainage system.

Is it similar to an ebb & flow system?

It has a liner as the ebb&flow system but that is the only similarity. We have the Capillary material that

Could it happen that the horse goes through down to the concrete?

No this have never happened and is impossible due the exact moisture control of the sand

What sand works with the system?

The equestrian footing sand that is preferred is the recommended FEI sand, see reference material file. However, many sands can be used as long as the amount of clay and silt is limited to ensure proper drainage of sand. Sands behave very differently depending on particle size, shape and composition, and a certified professional engineer should always be consulted before selecting the footing sand. Also, any additives such as fibers should always be checked if used.

Can this system be used for any type of equestrian sports, such as show jumping and dressage, western etc?

Yes, any type of arena can be perfected with the Capillary Equestrian system. The key is perfect moisture conditions regardless of the weather, and regulating the moisture is the most important thing in arena management regardless of the type of riding is exercised.

How much water does the system use?

The Capillary Equestrian system uses significantly less water than any over-head irrigated system, up to 85% less.

When do I need to renew the driplines?

The life expectancy of the drip-lines is longer than the 10 year Guarantee of the Capillary installation, and longer than the expected life span of the footing sand. The functionality should always be checked when changing the sand and necessary upkeep or replacements should be performed. The drip-line used is a special drip-line in a protective sleeve of capillary fabric, which extends the life-span compared to regular drip-lines.

Do I need to water my arena footing?

No, theirrigation comes from underneath and is run by an application on your phone. You can change the moist very easily. In a few hours you can have it more wetor more dry.

How deep do I need to groom my arena?

About 2 inches=5 cm deep normally but 2-4times a month, specially in the hot areas you have to groom 4 inches=10 cm deep to break up the algae

Can I put the footing outside (in outdoor arenas)?

Yes, it drains like no other footing, and with irrigation from below and no surface water evaporation the footing is still moist enough to not give off any dust.

Does the footing freeze in cold temperatures?

Yes. You must empty the system before the real cold weather starts. You don’t need the drip lines in the fall when it is raining a lot any way on a outdoor arena. Onan indoor arena in the cold areas you can have the geothermal system connected.

What is the best footing for commercial facilities?

A footing where you can change the moisture level in a couple of hours depending what discipline you are riding.

Why choose CapillaryFlow?

For total moisture control. You can choose to have it drier in the morning and moister in the afternoon consistent over the full arena.

How is the drip liner located in the concrete?

It is sawn into the Capillary material.

Do you have to turn off the water when it is below zero degrees celsius?

Yes, youhave to empty the system from water. Otherewise the frozen water can damage the irrigation.

Geothermal heating icon

Geothermal FAQs

Is geothermal only for cold climates or can it benefit warmer regions also?

Geothermal can benefit both cold and warm regions and climates. In warmer climates, it will help to reduce the temperature of the rootzone because the water passing through the system will cool it down as the ground will absorb some of the heat from the water.

How low can the temperature go and I still avoid frozen ground conditions?

This is tricky to answer, because it depends on the amount of water in the profile, the amount of stored solar energy in the ground etc. This system is made to avoid extreme temperature swings and will protect the plants from quick shifts and maintain a milder temperature in the root zone. It will avoid most frozen ground conditions, or lessen the depth and remove the frozen ground faster once temperatures get milder again.

Do I have to use a heat-exchange pump with the Geothermal System?

No, the same water that is circulated in the Capillary Hydroponic system is used to circulate in the Capillary Geothermal system and will warm or cool any root zone it is used in.

Capillary Hydroponics FAQs

How much water can I save with this system?

Most turf areas see between 80-90% savings in water over a season.

What is the cost of the system?

Please see exact pricing on the Hydroponics Page or reach out to one of our sales reps for best current estimate. The total price including construction is most times similar or within 10-20% of a regular USGA root zone construction.
